It has been said before and
doubtless it will be said again - anyone
can learn to speak
Spanish - or any other language, for that
matter. Granted, a language which has a unique alphabet or
set of symbols such as Japanese, Hebrew or Korean may be
somewhat more of a challenge, but with due diligence, you
too can learn a language. The biggest barrier, really, is
our own perception of our limitations. Try to think like the
Little Engine That Could - I CAN learn a foreign language! I
CAN learn a foreign language! And sure enough, it will
become truth for you!
Someone asked how they could get to Carnegie
Hall and the reply was: Practice! Practice! Practice! Well,
when you decide to learn to speak
Spanish, the same will apply to you: practice! Every single
day, for at least 15 minutes, you should devote your entire
attention to Spanish and nothing but Spanish, whether you
listen to a language tape or just review vocabulary - just make
sure it is in Spanish! Persistence in learning is really what
will pay off for you in the end. Do not let yourself get
discouraged - you can do it!
In order to learn to speak Spanish, you would
do well to remember the four essential elements to
learning any language:
- You
must read the language.
- You
must write the language.
- You
must listen to the language.
- And
finally, you must SPEAK the language!
When you decide to learn to speak
Spanish, remember the rule about learning new habits: if
you want to establish a new habit or way of doing things, you
must stick to it for no less than 20 days, so do not give up if
you get discouraged after just one week. After all, no child is
born completely fluent in their own native tongue! Vary your
study habits by utilizing all of the four essential elements:
listen to Spanish language tapes, listen to music in Spanish,
read Spanish (as much as you can!) and most certainly you
should seize every possible opportunity to speak
Spanish.
Try to speak Spanish with someone to whom it
is a first language. In this way you will perfect your
pronunciation and achieve a proper accent. So get started today
- read Spanish, listen to Spanish, and practice, practice every
day and soon you will be able to say Hablo Espanol - I speak
Spanish!
